Although we are in the Easter season, it is worth looking back to a Lenten theme for this new composition: Lucio Mosè Benaglia‘s Stabat Mater für Mariupol, which just premiered on April 2nd within a Ukrainian Catholic Church in Munich.

In response to the bombing of Mariupol (which means Mary’s City), Benaglia was moved to write this solemn lament:

Remembering this history and its name gave me the idea of setting the text of the Stabat Mater to music. The Stabat Mater is one of the most frequently set texts in the Christian tradition of all time and depicts the pain and suffering of the mother of Jesus under the cross. I have thought of grouping the twenty stanzas of the hymn in such a way as to produce fourteen pieces corresponding to the number of the Stations of Cross

The piece amazed me with its great beauty and spiritual power, clearly drawing upon tradition and yet speaking to a contemporary tragedy. In fact, I was shocked when I stumbled upon it. It is worth your time!
