My friend and former student, Katie Warner, just did a focus on lay Catholics who are helping to revive Catholic culture. See the article here.

I’m glad that Katie included my book, The Beer Option, as part of this revival of culture. This is exactly why I wrote the book, to show that there are ways that we can become creators, not simply consumers, of culture. God has given each one of us the command to subdue the earth and care for the Garden of the earth, expressing our creativity through our work. Brewing is one expression of this and it has a long Catholic history, especially through the long tradition of brewing monks, canons, and friars.

Brewing has been bolstering local economies throughout the country and even the home economy as more and more people homebrew. This is one way we can imitate the monks and to express the creativity of work. Beer, let’s be clear, can lead us away from God and others, but it can, and should, be ordered to God’s glory and consumed through the three “f”s of feasting, fasting, and friendship.
